Review concept of State Sovereignty- states having full rights over the land. http://www.history.com/topics/confederate-states-of-america
Vocab. overview. secession - withdrawal from the Union. States' rights - rights and powers independent of the federal government that are reserved for the states by the Constitution; the belief that states ' rights supersede federal rights and law.
This all goes to the idea that the Southern states seceded. South carolina was the first state to leave the Union in Dec. 1860, in Feb. 1861 TX, LA, MS, AL, FL, and GA seceded. The final four Southern states did not want to seceded for political reasons but they finally did after the attack on Fort Sumter.
Have the class spilt into 4 groups two for the North and two for the South (this will help them for their Glogster project) have them research 5 major reasons, besides slavery, for the Civil War. They will chose from a list provided in class. They will have to have supporting details for the reasons. The Southern group should consider the difference between the northern South states and the southern South states.
